RAYMOND GLOECKLER

b. 1928, Portage, Wisconsin

Education: University of Wisconsin, BS, 1950; MS, 1952

Ray Gloeckler has taught at several universities and has recently retired from the post of Professor of Art at the University of Wisconsin - Madison.

He has received over 100 awards; has participated in exhibitions nationally and internationally; and had one man exhibitions throughout the United States and Canada. His work is in the permanent collection of the Butler Institute of American Art, Detroit Art Institute, Philadelphia Museum, Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Cincinnati Art Museum, Ohio State University, University of South Dakota, Wichita Art Association, Print Club of Philadelphia etc.

'During the best times woodcutting becomes instinctive. The drawing on the board ceases to dictate. The artist reacts to the cut and the thrust of the wood. Cut follows cut with vigour and certainty. The tool has its way.'

Gloeckler sees himself in the tradition of Gillray, Cruikshank, Hogarth and Rowlandson; Kollwitz and Munakata; Breughel and Grosz; the history of cartoons. Woodcutters tend to the grotesque. A comic form turns into something stronger.
