FRANK MARTIN

b. 1921

Education: Saint Martin's School of Art, London

Frank Martin studied with Getrude Hermes at Saint Martin's School of Art.

Between 1948 and 1966 he worked as a freelance illustrator and wood engraver, for numerous books and magazine publishers, advertisers and private clients.

Since 1966, he has been primarily a printmaker in woodcut, etching and drypoint. Between 1953 and 1980 he taught engraving and etching at Camberwell, from 1976 as Head of Graphic Arts.

He has had 25 one-man exhibitions in Britain and abroad since 1956. He wrote and illustrated Newhaven-Dieppe, (1996) and a book of his wood-engravings, with a full catalogue, was published in 1998 (both from the Previous Parrot Press).

In an afterword to the latter, he describes himself contentedly as a jobbing artist.
